The Five Things You Need To Know Today (January 7)

1. Polar Vortex Continues- The south and eastern parts of the United States are still bracing and dealing with a “polar vortex” that has schools and businesses closing. States and cities across the United States are experiencing extreme below average temperatures.

2. Japan And Turkey Agree On Trade, Atomic Power- Japan’s and Turkey’s leaders met Tuesday to confirm their cooperation on nuclear technology and free trade. Japan has been exporting many nuclear facilities and tools to Turkey for a few years now.

3. Senate Approves Janet Yellen- Janet Yellen has been confirmed by the US Senate to be the next Federal Reserve. Despite republican opposition, Yellen was confirmed by the majority of the Senate.

4. Sasheer Zamata Will Join SNL- Sasheer Zamata, an African-American woman will join the cast of SNL next week. SNL has come under fire recently for not including a female cast member of color.

5. Florida State Wins BCS Championship- The Florida State Seminoles defeated the Auburn Tigers last night 34-31 in the BCS National Championship. Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston took home the MVP.
