The Five Things You Need To Know Today (August 28)

1. Obama To Speak At “I Have A Dream” 50th Anniversary- President Barack Obama has plans to speak at the 50th anniversary of the MLK Jr.’s march on Washington. Festivities begin a 9 am this morning and will trace the same path King walked 50 years ago today. 100,000 people are estimated to attend.

2. Air Force Academy Names Female Leader- The Air Force Academy has appointed Lt. Gen. Michelle Johnson as the first woman to leader the the Academy. Johnson has 32 years of experience in the Air Force is highly applauded appointment given the the shadow of sexual abuse that has damaged the Army’s image.

3. Wal-Mart Extends Benefits To Same-Sex Couples- Wal-Mart the huge discount retailer, will soon extend health care benefits to employees in same-sex relationships throughout stores in all 50 states regardless of laws governing those states. The coverage is an addition to providing vision care, 100% coverage on same surgeries and incentives to quit smoking.

4. Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones Split– After 13 years of marriage, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones have split up. They couple says “they are simply taking a break” but they haven’t been seen together since April.

5. Samsung To Launch Smart Watch- Trying to jump the gun of Apple, Samsung will be releasing a “smart watch” called the Galaxy Gear set for release on September 4. An Apple version is said to hit stores sometime in 2014.
