The Five Things You Need To Know Today (June 27)

1. Supreme Court Strikes Down DOMA and Proposition 8- In a 5-4 decision the Supreme Court of the United States ruled the Defense of Marriage Act and Proposition 8 to be unconstitutional. The ruling does in an sense legalize same-sex marriage federally, but paves the road for such legislation in the future.

2. Nelson Mandela Remains Critical- The former prime minster and civil rights leader still remains in critical condition in the hospital. His heath slightly improved overnight.

3. Jobless Claims Decreasing- According to Bloomberg, jobless claims decreased last week 9,000 to 346,000. Reductions are indicating employers confidence about consumer spending and the housing market.

4. Aaron Hernandez Arrested- Former New England Patriots Tight End Aaron Hernandez was arrested yesterday charged with murder among other gun charges. Soon after the New England Patriots released him.

5. Oprah Tops Forbes’ List- Oprah has topped the Forbes list of “Most Powerful Celebrities” after two years in second place. She joins Lady GaGa, Beyonce, Madonna and Taylor Swift among others.
