Much of popular music these days is EDM. You see DJs topping the charts with albums where they don’t even sing. I’m not sure if this is a bad thing. Similar to hip-hop, the commercial artists give the genre of music a bad name. In EDM you have interesting, “envelope pushing” acts like Disclosure or Jessie Ware paving new ground in the genre. But as the EDM becomes a bunch of sounds made on someone’s computer Daft Punk released Random Access Memories. A COMPLETE throwback to who “electronica” used to sound.
That being said, there are a ton of songs being released that sound like they are sometimes decades old. Here are five songs that sound like they are throwbacks, but have been released in the past year.
1. Ariana Grande- The Way (feat. Mac Miller)
Doesn’t this sound like a sign that Mariah Carey put on in the early 90s? Or how about Ashanti feat. Fat Joe?
2. Daft Punk- Get Lucky
Song of the summer.
3. Bruno Mars- Treasure
Bruno Mars is a pretty unique artist. Did you know he was an Elvis impersonator as a kid? On his new album Unorthodox Jukebox he showcases his versatility. “Locked Out of Heaven” sounded like a song by The Police and treasure is disco era Michael Jackson.
4. Beyonce- Love On Top
Beyonce just killing it with Motown soul.
5. Avril Lavigne- Here’s To Never Growing Up
Avril reallly can’t mature her sound. This is throwback in a bad way. Sounds like a mix of “Skater Boi” and “Complicated.”
