The Five Things You Need To Know Today (June 19)

1. Afghanistan Rejects Peace Talks With Taliban- Afghan President Hamid Karzai rejected peace talks with the Taliban today as he demands the violence to stop. In addition, he announced the talks should only be between the Afghans and the Taliban, instead of the United States seeking a political solution.

2. New York Muslims Sue NYPD- A group of New York Muslims have sued the New York Police Department (NYPD) for unfairly monitoring them, which they call invasive and unconstitutional. One imam said that he spend more than $2,000 upgrade video surveillance to show the police’s surveillance.

3. Google Will Soon Add “Carousel” To Search Results- Google will soon add a “carousel” to search results meaning users can search for an item and then view an interactive bar of results with pictures, reviews and descriptions.

4. Dish Will Not Buy Sprint- Earlier this Spring it was reported that Dish would making a bid for the telecommunications giant Sprint. Dish had a deadline of Tuesday to offer a price, but has backed away. It now seems like SoftBank will purchase the company.

5. RIP Michael Hastings- BuzzFeed reporter and former RollingStone writer Michael Hastings passed away yesterday at the age of 33. Hastings was known for his uncompromising coverage of politics. He was most well known for his profile of General Stanley McChrystal.  The article “Runaway General” eventually led to McChrystal’s dismissal.
