The only thing that could really upstage the release of Kanye West’s Yeezus this week is another album release by another high-profile. And guess what? This has actually happened. In a 3 minute commercial last night, Jay-Z announced he would be releasing a new album called Magna Carta Holy Grail on July 4th. Not a ton is know about the album so far, but we do know in addition to the album’s release Jay-Z is having a busy summer. He executive produced The Great Gatsby soundtrack released in May and will soon embark on a summer stadium tour with none other than Justin Timberlake.
Here are five things we know about Jay-Z’s Magna Carta Holy Grail.
1. It will be released on July 4th.
There is really nothing more American than apple pie and Jay-Z. During the game 5 of the NBA Finals last night Jay-Z had a 3 minute commercial for the new album that culminated in announcing a July 4th release date. Perfect timing. It will be a great soundtrack to everyone’s July 4th weekend.
2. It has already gone platinum.
The album will be released in conjunction with the Samsung Galaxy phone. We still do not know how much product placement there will be on the album, but you will be able to purchase the album via the Google Play store. The first 1 million people to download a free app will actually receive the album for free courtesy of Samsung. Only Jay-Z could secure a deal in which he already makes $5 million before anyone has heard the songs.
3. The album is full of heavy hitting producers.
If you watch the video above you are treated to a “3 minute behind-the-scenes” documentary of the project. Included in the “mini-doc” are producers Rick Rubin, Pharrell, Swizz Beatz and Timbaland.
4. Magnal Carta Holy Grail seems like the anti-Yeezus.
Whereas Yeezus doesn’t really have any radio friendly singles and had little to none commercial promotion, Magna Carta Holy Grail is the complete opposite. Jay-Z (or Samsung) purchased some of the most expensive advertising space on a Sunday night and produced a 3 minute(!) commercial.
Also, I would highly doubt that Samsung would partner with Jay-Z on the album if they didn’t think it would be financially/commercially viable and/or include songs like “Black Skinhead” or “New Slaves.” Could you even see Kanye West letting his studio work be shown to every American with a computer? I don’t think so.
5. It will be a monster hit.
Sure Jay-Z hasn’t made a “critically” successful album since The Black Album, but he isn’t making music for “true hip-hop heads” anymore. He’s making music for the masses. I thought The Blueprint 3, was panned unfairly and to be honest American Gangster and Kingdom Come were pretty terrible. That being said both albums went platinum. America is hungry for a new Jay-Z record and July 4th is the perfect time to unleash it.
