Five Awesome Songs/Videos Released This Week

Where Monday through Thursday I’ll be focusing on with an artist/theme/genre of music, Fridays are for posting songs you might have missed in new releases.

1. The Dream- High Art (feat. Jay-Z)

The Dream is the R&B singer for the indie rock fan. Here he returns with the first single off his highly anticipated IV Play. Jay-Z has been busy the last couple of weeks with starting the sports agency, the “Open Letter” song and being on Kendrick Lamar’s “Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe” remix. His verse here is pretty good.

2. Smith Westerns- Varsity

The Smith Westerns were the super hot new indie band in 2011. They have a similar sound to MGMT without the psychedelic rock. “Varsity” is the first single off their new album Soft Will. They also have a summer tour planned out which ends at Austin City Limits. For a full list of dates, click here.

3. The Lonely Island- Spring Break Anthem

The Lonely Island is back. To promote their album, they are starting #WackedWednesday. Every Wednesday they will release a new song from their album The Whack Album. ‘Spring Break Anthem” features the boys explaining a “bro’s spring break,” while talking about gay marriage. It’s interesting. But it also features James Franco and Edward Norton. Fast forward to 1:42 to see the video.

4. Pusha T- Numbers on the Board

I know I said that Jay-Z is busy, but how about Mr. Kanye West. He’s got a baby on the way, making a new crazy album in Paris and now he’s in Pusha-T’s new video. Produced by Ye, the video is pretty dark. The beat is super simple but it works. Pusha T is the man.

5. Queens of the Stone Age- I Appear Missing

Queens of the Stone Age is probably the most popular “hard rock band” right now. Both commercially and critically, their music is received very well. The band is fronted by Josh Homme and by a bunch of rotating bandmates. Their new album …Like Clockwork is set for release on June 4th. One song has Elton John on it. Interesting.
